Granlibakken Ski Resort - "a touch of Norway among Lake Tahoe ski resorts"

In the mid-1940s, back when land was cheap, a famous Norwegian ski jumper, Kjell "Rusty" Rustad purchased 84 acres in a valley just above Lake Tahoe, California. In 1949, Rusty opened one of Lake Tahoe's first ski resorts, "Granlibakken," named in honor of an area in Norway where he skied as a boy. Granlibakken meant "a hill sheltered by fir trees" in his native tongue. This is a perfect description of this Lake Tahoe ski area. Granlibakken's ski hill became a popular destination for both tourists and local Reno - Lake Tahoe skiers. The small valley's bountiful snow pack provides alpine skiing from early fall to late spring. During the 1950s the hill flourished, hosting the 1952 Junior Olympics among other events. In 1977, Granlibakken was purchased by Bill and Norma Parson. They stayed true to Rusty's original vision of Granlibakken's unique place among lake Tahoe ski resorts. The Parson family also saw the future potential of this small ski resort. They combined Granlibakken's breathtaking scenery, great service and welcoming accommodations to create a unique atmosphere among Lake Tahoe ski resorts. It's a lot cheaper than traveling to Norway!
